James Broderick

Jim Broderick rowed varsity crew in the late 1960’s in Springfield, MA for Tech High School, a 3-year (10-12) public school with an enrollment of 2,200 students.  At the time, Tech Crew boasted 3 freshman 8’s, 2 JV 8’s, and a varsity crew.  Rowing on the Connecticut River out of the boathouse located by the North End Bridge, Tech scrimmaged with Classical High School, another Springfield public high school with crew, as well as with American International College, both of which also rowed out of the same north end location.  Although he did not row in college, in the late 1980’s after a hiatus of over 20 years, Broderick signed up for the YMCA’s sculling program at Springfield’s Riverfront Park (spearheaded by Laurie Campbell, another PVRC board member), and has been sculling recreationally ever since.

Fred Fedesco

I began Rowing in 2004.  I had no idea what sculling was before I joined the program. I quickly learned that sculling can be many things; a great workout or a peaceful row on the river, at six a.m. it is great way to start the day.. watch the sun rise, watch the eagle fly overhead, meet great people.Yes, I love it.

Charlie Hines

I began rowing in 1999, when I was 48 years old. I just fell in love with it and have rowed every season since then. My first race was in 2003 at the Green Mountain Head in Putney, VT and, again just loved it. I've been in at least one race each season since and hope to have many more. While rowing a single is a solitary pursuit, the camaraderie that surrounds the rowing is fantastic.

Rod Klich

Marci Kelly

I began rowing 2009 during the Learn to Row days at the urging of a friend. Rowing has provided me the opportunity to combine my love of both exercise and the water. It is a wonderful way to begin the day!

Lori Massa

I began rowing in 2008.  I read about the Learn to Row days, took the rowing lessons and I was hooked!  The river is so beautiful  and peaceful in the morning.

I row for recreation and to be around nature.

Laurie Campbell

I got involved in rowing around 1985. My boyfriend/now husband and I bought recreational rowing shells. and started the Springfield YMCA rowing program. He did the fundraising and I ran the program for a few years. Once I had kids I stopped rowing (1990-2006) and kayaked with family. Started mentoring 2007 season.

Michael Paulson

I started rowing in 1991 for Lehigh University. I rowed for all 4 years until graduating in 1995, learning to scull during the summers.  I then didn’t row from 1996 until meeting up with Jonathan at Long Meddowe Days in 2007. I now try to row as often as my schedule and the weather allow. I also do most of the maintenance on club equipment.
